S.O.S

2018

The soil in this installation was donated by Mexican and other Latin American immigrants who left their countries seeking better and safer opportunities in the United States. On the dirt, a repetitive pattern of SOS (Morse code for help) was stamped using the two iron stamps hanging on the wall. The inspiration for this installation was an image of tracks left on dirt by immigrants in the Texas desert. Like many of these immigrants, there are countless people around the world who are also leaving tracks in very inhospitable environments. Unfortunately, many of these tracks, silent cries for help, are unseen and erased by time.
